On the 6th of July 1988, 167 men lost their lives when tragedy struck in the North Sea on board the Piper Alpha platform. To this day, it remains the worlds worst offshore disaster. Like most others in the area, Northsound remembers the tragedy vividly and joined the community in commemorating the 20th anniversary. A series of features were broadcast as part of Northsound News as well as a special documentary programme Piper Alpha 20, Lest We Forget. This told the story through the words of those involved, including survivors, emergency services, oil industry representatives and some of the families torn apart by the horrific events. The programme also featured audio from Northsounds audio archive.
